What are Inset Cabinets and Why Choose Them?

November 25, 2022

There are many factors to consider when designing your cabinetry. You have to think about the color, the style, sizes, proportions, even how many cabinets you need. What some homeowners don’t really know much about is the type of cabinet build and how it affects the look of your space. The one we’ll specifically talk about today is the inset cabinet. In this article, we’ll go over what it is, what makes it unique, and why you might choose it for your home.

What is Inset Cabinetry?

You might not know the term itself, but we’re sure you’ve seen inset cabinetry before –most likely on Pinterest, Houzz, or on magazines focused on high-end interiors. First popularized in the 18th and 19th centuries, inset style cabinets are a type of framed cabinetry where the doors sit inside the openings formed by the cabinet face frames –hence the term “inset”. There’s only a minimal gap between the cabinet door and face frames, thus requiring precise and skillful craftsmanship. Inset cabinets have a distinct look, often favored by many homeowners and designers of luxury homes.

Inset Cabinets vs. Overlay Cabinets

On the other end of the spectrum is the overlay cabinet. This is a more commonly seen build type where the cabinet doors go over and cover the cabinet frame. Functionally, they don’t differ greatly from inset cabinets, and each have their pros and cons. The primary reason homeowners and designers choose one or the other is for the specific look they create.

Take a look at the two kitchens below. Both primarily use white cabinets. Both are use Shaker-style doors, and sport a classic Hamptons look. Size and configuration aside, their primary difference lies in the cabinet type –one has inset kitchen cabinets, the other has full overlay cabinets. Inset kitchen cabinetry gives a distinct and refined look akin to fine custom furniture pieces.

Why Should I Choose Inset Cabinets?

  1. Looks Good With Traditional and Transitional Styles. Because this type of cabinet dates back many centuries ago, it’s no surprise that it works well with more traditional interiors. This is especially important if you want a period-accurate look for a traditional home.
However, that’s not to say that inset cabinets won’t work in a more modern setting. By using it with more streamlined door styles such as flat slabs and Shaker doors, inset cabinetry also works with transitional style interiors. This is perfect for those looking for a good middle ground between vintage looks and contemporary styling.

  2. Looks More Luxurious and Refined. Inset cabinets just give off a different look compared to similar overlay counterparts. Doors flush within the cabinet frames make the whole piece seem more like fine furniture than a utilitarian cabinet. This timeless and elegant appearance is why inset cabinets are highly sought after.

  3. Doors Will Have Less Wear and Tear. Because the cabinet doors are set flush with the cabinet frame, they’re more protected while closed. Compared to overlay doors, inset doors will get nicked and bumped much less.

  4. Increased Resale Value. More often than not, inset cabinets are bespoke or custom-made. You won’t really find them as stock options in big box stores. Higher quality construction, especially in key areas like the kitchen, can increase the sale value of your home.

What are the Disadvantages of Inset Cabinets?

  1. Higher Costs. The main sticking point many homeowners have with inset cabinetry is its price tag. Compared to equivalent quality custom full overlay cabinets, inset ones can cost 15-30% more. This can be problematic for some, especially those who have larger kitchens to fit out.

  2. Smaller Margin of Error. What drives up the cost of inset cabinets is the precision required to build them and ensure a proper fit. It’s a job best left to specialized cabinet makers, which of course cost more.

  3. More Maintenance Required. As you might expect with a product so precise, there is more maintenance required. From regular use, changes in temperature with the seasons, and relative humidity in your area, your doors can become misaligned. Because the gap between the door and cabinet frame is minimal, minor misalignment can cause doors to stick or prevent smooth operation of drawers. It’s not hard to work around these issues, but it’s definitely not a “set and forget” kind of thing.

Are Inset Cabinets Right For You?

Beautiful, timeless, and elegant. It’s undeniable that inset cabinetry is a resurging trend that’s likely here to stay. It has a unique and distinct look that’s difficult to replicate with the alternative overlay options. If you love the fine furniture look, and the higher cost of investment and regular maintenance aren’t an issue for you, then we definitely recommend going for inset cabinetry.

Are you considering inset kitchen cabinetry? Maybe you’re looking to use inset cabinet doors for a bathroom vanity or walk-in closet. Whichever the case, you’re going to need a specialist.
